Description

Description

Not all Inca sites were built to be found easily. Some, like Waqrapukara, were meant to remain hidden—guarded by mountains, silence, and time. Perched dramatically above deep canyons, this enigmatic site combines the strength of a fortress with the spirituality of a ceremonial sanctuary.

Far from the usual tourist routes, Waqrapukara offers a truly off-the-beaten-path experience. Its name, meaning “Horn Fortress,” comes from the unique rock formations that rise like natural towers over the landscape. Visiting this place is not just a hike—it is a journey into isolation, history, and breathtaking Andean scenery.

Itinerary

Waqrapukara Tour – The Hidden Fortress of the Andes
  • Your adventure begins early in the morning with hotel pick-up in Cusco (approximately 4:00–5:00 a.m.). You will travel by tourist transport for about 2.5 to 3 hours through scenic Andean landscapes until reaching the starting point of the hike.
  • Before beginning the trek, you will enjoy breakfast surrounded by the peaceful beauty of the highlands. The hike to Waqrapukara takes approximately 2 to 3 hours, depending on the chosen route and pace. Along the way, you will walk through valleys, rolling hills, and remote areas where you may encounter local farmers and herds of llamas and alpacas.
  • As you approach the site, the dramatic silhouette of Waqrapukara begins to emerge, rising above the canyon with its distinctive horn-like rock formations. Once at the archaeological complex, your guide will explain its history, believed to have origins in pre-Inca cultures and later used by the Incas for ceremonial purposes.
  • You will explore terraces, enclosures, and sacred spaces while enjoying spectacular panoramic views of the Apurímac Canyon, one of the deepest in Peru.
  • After taking time to rest, explore, and capture photographs, you will begin the hike back to the starting point. You will then enjoy lunch before returning to Cusco, arriving in the late afternoon.
