Description

The Larco Museum is a true gem of pre-Columbian art from ancient Peru. Founded in 1926 by Rafael Larco Hoyle, it houses one of the country’s most important collections of pre-Hispanic art.
The museum displays over 45,000 masterpieces spanning the history of ancient Peru, from the earliest hunter-gatherer societies to the emergence of the great Andean civilisations and empires.

Itinerary

Treasures of Ancient Peru – Larco Museum
  • Permanent exhibition
    Permanent exhibition
The museum has 13 permanent exhibition galleries, where the artefacts allow us to travel back in time and understand the complexity of ancient Peruvian society.
Throughout the tour, we discover the Andean worldview, the sacred relationship with nature, the development of textiles, and music and dance as forms of cultural expression, as well as ritual practices, including human sacrifice.
  • Open Storage Area
The Larco Museum features a unique space known as the open storage area, where around 30,000 archaeological artefacts, mainly pottery, are kept. This area allows visitors to view up close one of the most comprehensive collections of ancient Peru.
Through these pieces, we can learn about various aspects of the lives of the ancient Peruvian people: their physical features, their diet, their religious beliefs, as well as their traditions and customs. Pottery not only served a utilitarian purpose, but also acted as a means of artistic and symbolic expression.
  • Checan Munay Erotic Gallery.
Eroticism and sexuality were deeply intertwined with the Andean worldview. The ‘Checan Munay’ gallery depicts romantic bonds and sexual interaction in ancient Peruvian societies.
This gallery highlights the skill of pre-Hispanic artists, who depicted the human body with sensitivity and detail, celebrating nudity as a natural expression of life, affection and fertility.
